I had my photography induction, which was put in place for me to understand how to take pictures for my front cover of my magazine. I had a quick introduction to all the equipment that will be needed, for example, two soft boxes- the main light, the fill light and also a snoot - the hairline light. This is also known as 3 point lighting which is what is used for most cover start photoshoots. There are two brands of lighting which are Bowers and Trinity. I also got introduced to the two DSLR cameras that i can choose to use which are Nikon or Cannon. Other things I learnt about were, F-stop, white balance, ISO and shutter speed.
There are two backdrops to choose from, either a white backdrop or a black drop. The choice I make depends on how I want to show the cover star and also the genre I choose. For my magazine I will be choosing the black backdrop because I think that it will suit my magazine much better rather than having an image on a white backdrop. When I want to take pictures of my cover star I will have to make them stand around 5-6 feet away from back of the backdrop, because if they were too close to the back then they will blend in with the backdrop.
Another piece of equipment that was introduced to me, was the reflectors. Their main job is to bounce light back onto the cover start so that the image looks a lot more better due to the extra lighting. When using a DSLR camera I need to choose either manual focus - MF, or autofocus - AF. Manual focus is when I want to focus on certain areas and autofocus is when the camera focuses on the frame itself, without me having to rotate the focus dial.
